Open Your Mind

Have you ever met someone who was really close minded to things? They don’t like thinking too far outside the box or allowing something outside of the ordinary to occur. This doesn’t mean that they are not smart individuals, it basically means they have a hard time opening up to something new or CHANGE.

I came across this quote when I attended the ULM strategic planning workshop. It was written on a chalk board in one of their break rooms.

“Minds are like Parachutes – they only work when open”
-Thomas Dewar

It really got me thinking about individuals who are close minded tend to stay stuck in their ways and don’t really advance themselves or assist others in advancing. However, those who’s minds are wide open and tend to wonder make extraordinary leaps and bounds in accomplishments that many thought are/were not possible. +Continue Reading

Know Your Enemies

If you are in business, you know you should know your compitition very well. You should know what you are going up against so that you can compete for your share of the market. I understood this, but It didn’t really dawn on me until I came across this quote…

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle”

- Sun Tzu

This is a famous quote from “The Art of War”. I have actually came across it before, but it really struck a cord this time. The quote boils down to this, know your enemies as well as you know yourself. That is HUGE. Instead of just looking and knowing your enemy, you should know them just as well as you know yourself. You should know your competitors inside and out. And think about how hard it is to EVEN know yourself…. thats tough on its own.

If you want to WIN in business, you need to know exactly who you are up against so that you can defeat them with no problems. Take the time out to study your opponent and “you need not fear the results of a hundred battles”.

What To Focus On

I know of a guy, Chris Record who had the chance to spend a few hours with a mega millionaire at his house in San Diego, California.  He told Chris some stories and gave a perspective on how he thinks about money.

He said; Chris, I never look at how much something costs, but rather how much it will make me.  Chris said he gave me him first real life lesson in ROI and how to think like a millionaire.

I liked this quote and it really got me thinking just as it did for Chris. Not only does it give me a thought about return on investment in the future in terms of money, it also got me thinking about the Law of Attraction. I am a firm believer in the Law of Attraction, so now this makes since in multiple ways.

If you focus on what a purchase will get you in the long run, you are better off at making decisions. Just about all money spending habits should be looked like as an investment. Invest in faith, health, and your success at whatever you choose. If you think like this, you are less likely to purchase a random pair of shoes, a video game, or a huge box of chocolate. These things will not bring you ahead in life unless the shoes are to replace your old running shoes or the huge box of chocolates is to prevent you from sleeping on the couch for the next few days. When looking at it in terms of money, it all boils down to your ROI and if you believe the money you are thinking about spending is going to be worth the purchase because you know the value will increase. +Continue Reading

My Review of the One Minute Entrepreneur

I am a very entrepreneurial type person. I decided to pick up the book “One Minute Entrepreneur” after stumbling across it in the book store a few weeks ago. I just couldn’t help buying it after reading a sentence on the inside fold of the book cover, “offers business people and would-be entrepreneurs a treasure trove of wisdom on how to think, act, and succeed in creating and sustaining a business”. I am always looking for extra knowledge that can help me in any way operate and grow MyWants.

The name of the book as well as the back cover essentially explains that by focusing on a few essentials, you will dramatically increase your chances of success in entrepreneurship and business. After reading through the 133 page book, it very much sticks to what it says. The book is short and to the point. There is no blabbing off of point, and there is even “One Minute Insights” at the end of each chapter to highlight the important aspects of wisdom to take away. I was particularly fond of this because I didn’t have to guess what the important parts of wisdom were in the book. They made sure to highlight it for you! This also gave me the insight of creating a category of this blog of my insights that I learn at any point of my life that I would like to share with others.

The One Minute Entrepreneur was very compact and delivers on what it says. The story line and tips are very easy to read and understand. I feel that I have truly learned something from this book and have gained a resource that I can look back to for reference to situations I may face in my entrepreneurial journey.

I will give you my top insights of this book and how some of them can be related and used in Social Media:

  • “Keep a notebook of the wisdom you read, hear, and learn, and distill that learning into One Minute Insights”. This is the perfect opportunity to create or utilize your existing blog to aggregate your learned wisdom and share it with others.
  • My favorite of all time that derives from Zig Ziggler, “You can get what you want in life if you help other people get what they want”. That is the motto and mantra of MyWants and how I will try to live my life.
